A section of completed phase 1

The McIntosh Run Watershed Association is proud to officially open Phase 1 of the McIntosh Run Community Trail! The trail is on HRM park land and was built and is maintained by the McIntosh Run Watershed Association, a volunteer community group based right here in Spryfield. Capital funding for trail construction was provided through grants from HRM and the Department of Health Promotion and Protection (Nova Scotia). We hope you will enjoy active recreation on the new trail.

Future Plans for Trail Construction

We plan to complete the Community Trail portion of the trail system (Phase 2) in 2010, contingent on sufficient funding. The Riverside Loop Trail (Phase 3) will be a narrower, more rustic trail along the river. The Wilderness Trail (Phase 4) will be a rugged trail across the backlands to Herring Cove; the trail will be varied, in some places climbing along bedrock ridges, and in other places hugging the river's edge.

What else do we do?

The primary goal of the McIntosh Run Watershed Association is to protect the health of the McIntosh Run, an urban river that is home to many creatures including brook trout and river otters. We are involved in monitoring water quality, public education and promotion of community stewardship of the river. Another goal is trail development, which will allow more people to access the river and the wild lands surrounding the river, and so develop a deeper appreciation for the river and its wild inhabitants.

Yes, we do want your help!

If you are curious about the McIntosh Run Watershed Association and the work we are doing, please come to our next meeting. We meet the third Monday of each month (except December).

Note that the McIntosh Run Community Trail is within HRM park land — ATVs & motorized dirt bikes are strictly forbidden and should be reported to police.
